THE MINI REX RABBIT
INTRODUCTION
The Mini Rex is a breed of domestic rabbit bred in 1984 in Florida by the late Monna Berryhill of Texas. The Rex mutation, derived in France in the 19th century, is recessive and causes the fur to protrude outward from the body, rather than lying flat, and the guard hairs to be shortened to the length of the undercoat, or slightly more.
The small size, plush coat and friendly personalities of Mini Rex rabbits make them one of the most popular rabbit breeds.
THE ORIGIN OF THE MINI REX DWARF RABBIT
The history of the Mini Rex rabbit begins at the end of the 20th century, in 1983, in Florida, USA. It was then that a breeder named Monna Berryhill received a dwarf rex rabbit at a show in Texas. Intrigued by the size and unusual characteristics of this dwarf rabbit with exceptional coat texture, she sought to recreate these qualities, resulting in the first litter of Mini Rex rabbits. The aim was to retain the captivating plush coat of the Rex rabbit, together with a reduced size, to create a novelty breed ideal for pet and show lovers.
Characterised by their distinctive textured coat, compared to the velvety, luxurious coat of a rex, Mini Rex rabbits quickly gained popularity among breeders and rabbit enthusiasts. Official recognition of the breed by the American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA) in 1988 further cemented their status in the rabbit world. The Mini Rex's luxurious coat texture and small size helped it to be considered an excellent choice for breeding and show competitions, as well as for pet adoption.
Today, the Mini Rex continues to hold a prominent place among the various rabbit breeds. Its unique proportions and exceptional coat, present in a variety of stunning colours and patterns, continually attract the admiration and interest of breeders and rabbit lovers alike. The story of the Mini Rex is a testament to the fascinating possibilities of selective breeding and the joy that these adorable animals can bring as companions in our homes.
MINI REX DWARF RABBIT STANDARD
We will once again be guided by the National Association of Family Rabbits (ASNAC) to get to know this beautiful breed, the standard shown below is an adaptation of the French one.
- GENERAL APPEARANCE: The body of this rabbit is short and robust. From above, its body forms a compact and perfectly rounded block. The musculature is well developed on very fine bones. The shortening and fineness of the fur (rex factor) highlight all the morphological imperfections that a specimen may have.
The front part has a fully formed chest and shoulders. The dorsal line is broad and short and ends in a full, well rounded croup. The legs are small and well positioned. The tail is underdeveloped.
The particularly small size should emphasise the dwarfism of the breed. There is no dewlap in either sex and sexual dimorphism is not marked.
- WEIGHT:
MINIMUM WEIGHT: 800 gr
IDEAL WEIGHT: 1200 gr - 1500 gr.
MAXIMUM WEIGHT: 1700 gr.
- HAIR: The rex factor entails a uniformity in the development of the coat, resulting in a homogeneity of texture, which is accompanied by a persistent vertical coat due to the extreme density and full consistency of the coat. The length of the coat on the back ranges from 14 - 17 mm.
- COLOURS AND PATTERNS: In general all the colours and patterns which exist in the Official Nomenclature of the Rabbits of Breed recognised in Spain are accepted. The classification and breed denomination should be the same as for the Dutch Dwarf.
White Rex Dwarfs with Blue or Red Eyes are classified as solid (unicoloured).
- HEAD, EYES AND EARS: The body is practically close to the head, with a very short, almost non-existent neck. The forehead and nose are extremely long, with strong jaws and well set cheeks.
- PRESENTATION AND CARE: According to general standards.
- FAULTS: Slight and serious faults are the same as in all breeds.
THE MINI REX DWARF RABBIT AND ALLERGIES
These breeds are more recommendable because their coats are extremely short and their moulting almost imperceptible, so the probability of allergy in someone who has an allergy to rabbit fur is minimal.
WHAT IS THE MINI REX LIKE AS A PET?
Mini Rex rabbits are known for their sociable and friendly nature, making them an excellent choice for both families and individuals. They are usually well-behaved and have a gentle temperament that makes them well loved by both their owners and breeders. Mini Rex rabbits tend to enjoy human companionship and are known to interact and play with their caregivers, fostering a strong bond.
In terms of nutrition, Mini Rex rabbits have a similar diet to all breeds of rabbits. Their nutritional needs include a balance of high quality rabbit pellets, fresh hay, fresh vegetables and clean water. The majority of their diet, around 70%, should be made up of hay, as it provides the fibre needed for digestion and helps to wear down their ever-growing teeth, some ideal treats to help wear down teeth are Reis d'Aranda carob berlins or Reis d'Aranda cherry and plum biscuits.
Mini Rex rabbits are generally robust and healthy animals. But, like all breeds, they are susceptible to specific health problems:
- MALOCLUSION: Incorrect placement of teeth, this can be genetic or acquired (from trauma or improper feeding).
- PODODODERMATIS: Due to the thinness of their pads (due to rex hair) the Mini Rex is prone to pododermatitis, so enclosure cleaning and weight control are essential to avoid excess moisture and obesity.
CONCLUSION
The Mini Rex is a fantastic breed whose adorable personality and fascinating coat make it a great choice for those who suffer from rabbit fur allergies or want the most inconspicuous shedding.
