ABSCESSES IN RABBITS
INTRODUCTION
Abscesses in rabbits are a relatively common condition and can be more or less serious depending on their location and extent.
WHAT IS AN ABSCESS?
An abscess is a cavity where pus accumulates. Abscesses can occur almost anywhere in the body. When an area becomes infected, the immune system tries to fight the infection. White blood cells rush to the infected area, collect inside the injured tissue and cause inflammation. During this process, pus forms. Pus is a mixture of white blood cells, germs and dead tissue.
MOST COMMON CAUSES OF ABSCESSES IN RABBITS
- Dental problems
- Previous wounds
- Biting (fighting)
- Punctures
- Spread through other wounds (e.g. an infection in the root of the tooth can spread to the bones or eyes)
- Septicaemia (infection in the blood)
- Inhalation of foreign bodies
IS AN ABSCESS DANGEROUS?
Yes, an abscess is always dangerous because it is an infection that can spread in many ways and can kill our rabbit at any moment. If we detect an abscess or suspicious lumps in any part of our rabbit's body we have to go to the vet so that the professional can apply the appropriate treatment which will include drainage, cleaning, medication and in the worst cases surgery.
CONCLUSION
Acting at the slightest sign is essential to avoid our rabbit getting ill and dying from the difficulties which the abscess presents, especially if it is in the jaw.
