The wide variety of colours we can find in domestic rats is amazing, as we have seen, but behind some of these beautiful and original colours can hide complicated genes that, if misused, can become a danger to our breeding line. These genes are known as: "Lethal genes". 

Although this may seem a relatively simple issue (because "rats eat everything, don't they?") it is much more complex and, if we want our rat to live as long as possible, we must ensure that we provide it with a careful diet adapted to its species and lifestyle. 

The Himalayan or ‘Great Russian’ Rabbit, despite its name, has no direct connection with the Himalayan region or Russia. Its name is derived from its appearance, which resembles that of some animals native to that area.

Albinism in animals - including humans - is caused by the inheritance of an altered copy of the gene responsible for regulating pigment production. Generally, the presence of a viable allele of this gene is sufficient for pigmentation to occur, so albinism is usually a genetic condition associated with a recessive homozygosity, i.e. the gene must be altered in both copies of chromosomes for albinism to occur.
