Canine curiosities

The Berger Picard or Picardy Shepherd is a breed of shepherd dog of French origin. This breed was nearly extinct after the world wars and is still a rare breed today. It is a human-oriented dog, loyal and suitable as a pet if socialised from birth.

The Pyrenean Shepherd Dog is a French dog which exists in two varieties: the long-haired and the smooth-faced. Both are recognised as separate breeds by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale. The long-haired breed (or variety) is slightly smaller and, of course, has a longer coat. Both then and now, these dogs perform herding functions as they are a very intelligent and active breed.

The Brie Shepherd belongs to one of the oldest French dog breeds and is first mentioned in 1809, so, like all European dogs, it has a long history.

The Beauceron is a breed of shepherd dog of very ancient origin with a rustic and strong appearance. It is also known by names such as Pastor de Beauce or Bas rouge because of the tan markings on its legs.

The Australian Sheepdog or Aussie is a dog that is as beautiful as it is tireless. Its origin is surprising because it is actually thousands of miles away from Australia. This breed is a combination of wit, boundless energy and affection, wrapped up in an attractive physical appearance with extraordinary eyes.

The Mallorcan Sheepdog or Ca de Bestiar is a Spanish breed of dog originating in Mallorca. Traditionally used in the Mallorcan countryside as a flock guardian, it has a characteristic black coat.

The Catalan shepherd (gos d'atura català in Catalan) is a breed of dog native to Catalonia. It is a shepherd dog that was mainly used to guard the flocks during the day in the Pyrenees and in the area occupied by the transhumance related to this area. This dog is bred in Europe, especially in Spain, Finland, Germany and Sweden.

The Slovak Tchuvatch is a breed of dog of the molosser type originating in Slovakia used as a livestock guarding dog.
